Do these words sound familiar? "I'm tired of talking to a brick wall." "I've told you that umpteen times." "Why am I always the one to put the kids to bed while you watch TV?" "If you really loved me, you'd want to be with me." Each of these phrases is an alarm bell, signaling the end of your marriage may be closer than you think. When Kenny Lewis's wife, Connie, said, "I'm getting so tired of working so hard to keep this marriage together," he was shocked. He thought he was a great husband. Typical male. Totally clueless. When he asked her to tell him how he'd hurt her, she said, "I've told you before and you haven't listened." His heart sank. Their marriage was in serious trouble. Desperate, Lewis turned to the New Testament to learn how to love his wife. He discovered the Bible uses sixteen different action words to describe love. Each of the terms challenges our modern concept of love as something you feel under the spell of candlelight and soft music. Instead, the Bible teaches that love is learning to control your response when your mate overdraws the checkbook, or wrecks the car, or when feelings inexplicably grow cold. If you want to learn how to love when you don't feel like it, join the journey of developing a satisfying love that will last. Do the book's love-learning steps work? Lewis not only survived his crisis, twenty-five years later he and Connie are more in love than ever!

If you really want to learn how to have a great relationship with your wife (or husband) then you need to read this book. Dr. Lewis gives us insights we all need if we are to enjoy the depth of relationship God intended.
I love the way Lewis opens up and shares from his own life, both as a husband, father, and pastor/counselor. This book is not theory, but comes from real life experiences that we can all learn from.

Learning To Love When You Don't Feel Like It edition by Kenny Lewis Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

My wife and I read through this book together during our first year of marriage. It helped to set the tone for our marriage to grow in love, understanding, and forgiveness—even when we don't feel like it!
This book grabbed my attention the minute I saw it. The cover picture, with its "Head butting" stance, was one I could relate to, and the content was the same... relatable! I saw my own mistakes in the words and stories printed on the pages of this book. I felt the pain of Kenny's transformation to love. And, that's what this whole book is about transformation. Learning how to turn our hearts over to the transforming power of Jesus' love so we can better love those around us. Pull up a chair, get comfortable, because you won't be able to put this book down!
When Kenny Lewis realized that his wife felt unloved in their marriage he was shocked, and he resolved not only to work on his marriage but to learn how to love well. He research hundreds of verses in the Old and New Testaments and learned about what the bible says about love. He learned that the bible refers to love as a verb, and as a result he wrote Learning to Love When You Don't Feel Like It.

The book uses scripture and experience to challenge the idea that love is a feeling. When love is defined as an action it is something that people can easily choose to do long-term despite their emotions.
The book is not filled with idealistic concepts that don't translate into everyday life. Every other page is filled with a story or a practical example. The book does an incredible job of using these stories to show both the positive or negative consequences of choosing to follow or not follow God's principles for love. While this shouldn't be the case, rooted in scripture and practical sometimes sound like oxymoron. In Lewis's book, rooted in scripture and practical work hand in hand to make a lovely marriage of truth and application. The book doesn't have a magical formula, but among other things it does give steps on how to let go and let God help us forgive when we don't feel like it. It gives steps on how to practically show kindness. It defines what "bearing all things" actually means.

Lewis writes this book as a husband learning to love his wife and family, and while this is a "Love & Marriage" book, the book's focus is much broader than just marital love. It's about how to love anybody, anytime, and under any circumstance. I wouldn't just recommend this book to married couples, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to be challenged in how they love and live.

Lewis is a Pastor in Brownsville, TX. While anyone in the country could relate to the stories in his book, he uses stories from the community he works in. For those of who are familiar with Lewis' community, I would especially recommend this book. The practical examples come from your neighbors, people in your community. You might even recognize a story or two from reading it in the newspaper. The book shows a beautiful picture of God working his love in the community of Brownsville
